Save treats for Holiday parties

In The Miami Herald, dietitian Sheah Rarback discusses a hot topic from Eat Right When Time is Tight by Patricia Bannan:

Save treats for holiday parties

Thanksgiving, the beginning of the season of friends, family and overeating, is a little over a week away. You will be reading articles on how to eat less at celebrations, but I think the key to feeling good and not popping your buttons is what you eat between parties. The amount of time spent working, shopping and getting ready is usually greater than the actual celebration.

If a time crunch sends your eating into overdrive, take a few tips from Eat Right When Time Is Tight by registered dietitian Patricia Bannan (NorLightsPress $15.95). This book provides practical tools for food and life balance that will help with the holiday season and throughout the year.

Breakfast is one of Bannan’s master strategies.

She suggests eating within two hours of waking. This boosts metabolism, improves mood and helps keep your eating in line the rest of the day. If you need to beat the morning traffic, a packet of instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of peanut butter at work provides a satisfying carbohydrate and protein combo. The book includes many other quick morning meals.

Combine two of Bannan’s master strategies — “safeguard your environment” and “eat aware” — for the workplace. If a coworker brings in rum balls, take one or two and put the rest out of sight.

If hunger pangs are an afternoon companion, bring in a piece of fruit or yogurt for a snack and steer clear of the cookies in the break room. Keep healthier choices within reach, and pay attention to the number of treats you eat.

If your New Year’s resolution is going to be to lose weight, don’t make that task more difficult by adding holiday pounds. Save the splurges for the parties, and you can start the new year in your old clothes.

Sheah Rarback is a registered dietitian on the faculty of the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.
